This is a japanese lady beetle (and, ironically, a male at that) climbing the shepherd's hook that holds either the hummingbird feeder or the sack of thistle seed to attract other birds now that the hummers have gone south for the season. I was shooting finches and a few chickadees without much success when I noticed this tiny fellow ascending the top-most part of the hook. He walked to the top and turned around and went partway back down before turning around again and repeating the journey. It sort of reminded me of myself when I think of something I want to retrieve from the basement and then get to the bottom of the stairs only to notice that the cat needs food or water. I'll address that need and then realize I'm not sure why I was in the basement in the first place. So I turn back up the stairs and try to re-trace my steps or remember what I'd been doing immediately before heading down initially. I'd like to say I remember almost at once and that's that. Notice I said, ''I'd like to say'' that's how it goes . . . As it happened with this beetle, he made the journey a couple of times and then turned in my direction, opened his shell to free his wings and flew away as if abandoning the original mission altogether. Not unlike me when I give up the basement quest and go about some other business once I realize I know neither why I was down there or what I was doing that led up to it . . . I can't wait for my AARP card to arrive ...
