Gales to 40 Knots . . .

Gales to 40 Knots. Numerous showers. Waves 10 TO 14 Feet. That was the National Weather Service's near-shore Lake Michigan forecast for this past Sunday, Nov. 6. When I saw the waves were expected to be 10-14 feet, I immediately thought of the lighthouse in South Haven. Standing at the end of a long pier, it's been featured in many photos of storms tossing the churning waters of Lake Michigan against it. Photos taken by other intrepid folks who braved the winds and cold for a chance to see and capture the drama and excitement on film or sensor. Soooo ... I told Weez that I thought a trip to the lakeshore sounded fun and she told me she thought I was nuts. I agreed and off we went. She waited (sanely) in the car while I leaned into the wind and shivered and shook my way through 20-30 minutes of shooting in a vain quest for a photo that, in the end, proved elusive. I did get some shots I'm fairly happy with. I did not get the photo I envisioned. In the 1975 movie, JAWS, the sheriff, as portrayed by Roy Scheider remarked at one point that, ''We're gonna need a bigger boat!'' After Sunday's outing I've come to the conclusion that I'm gonna need a bigger wave. Maybe next time ...
